Opportunities for Research

The Department has a wide variety of opportunities for research studies, both fundamental and in conjunction with industry. The Department has excellent facilities, including its own super-computing capabilities and modern equipment for experimental work in aerodynamics, structures, dynamics, etc. Areas in which we are working, many of which have received international recognition, include:-

  Aerodynamics and Fluid Dynamics
Computational fluid dynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, aeroelastics, vortex flows, rotor aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, boundary layer control, multiphase flow, heat and mass transfer, gas turbines.
Structures & Materials Advanced structural composites design, manufacture and testing
Dynamics & Control Nonlinear flight dynamics, avionics, helicopter control systems, simulation, structural dynamics and modal analysis/neural networks.
Avionics & Systems System design, safety, human factors, software engineering.

For specific detail regarding the projects, contact the relevant advisor using the departmental address or the contact details provided with each project description following the links above.

Funding

U.K. students: a number of Research Council and other awards (earmarked studentships and University Scholarships) are normally available annually for appropriately qualified graduates wishing to study to Ph.D. level. Self-funding is also possible. The minimum normal requirement for registration for a research degree is a 2nd class Honours degree in an appropriate subject. For Research Council Ph.D. studentships, the minimum requirement is an upper 2nd class degree. Funding awards normally cover University fees and provide the student with living expenses.

European Union (EU) students (other than from the UK): EU students are eligible to apply for the training awards and scholarships available to the Department. It should be noted that Research Council awards only cover the University fees for EU students; living expenses are not provided, unless the individual has been resident in the UK throughout the 3 years prior to the application, excluding residence solely for the purpose of full-time education. Studentships are awarded on the basis of merit and competition is intense.

Overseas students (other than from the European Union): overseas students are normally expected to obtain their own funding. An overseas student may be eligible for EPSRC funding if he/she has been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the application, excluding residence solely for the purpose of full-time education. The University offers a small number of Scholarships that are open to overseas students, in competition with EU and UK students, and ORS awards (government grants that cover the difference in cost between the University fee for an overseas student and that of an EU/UK student, which is Government determined). There is considerable competition for these awards. To find out more about the ORS Awards Scheme, contact:

The Department also funds students from research contracts from industry and government directly.

Visiting the Department

Access to the Queen's Building is strictly regulated and only authorised persons are permitted entry. Accordingly, if you wish to visit the Department it is necessary to make a prior appointment and not turn up unexpectedly. Prospective Ph.D. students from the UK will be invited to the Department where they will have the opportunity to see the facilities and talk to prospective research advisers.

When to Apply

Application to register for a higher degree can be at any time. However, when the applicant also wishes to be considered for an EPSRC studentship or a University Scholarship, applications are best submitted from October through March. The number of funded graduate research positions available in the Department, starting 1st October, is usually known by the end of the academic year.

Download a MS-Word copy of the application and reference forms.

Accommodation

A small number of graduate research students live in Student Houses owned by the University; the remainder live in rented private accommodation, usually within a 2 mile (3 kilometre) radius of the University. Further details can be obtained from:
